The City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts and Culture is asking nonprofit organizations, artists collectives and individual artists to apply to join the “Creative Corps Capital Region” program, which covers Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado, Alpine and Solano counties.

The program will provide grants to artist collectives and non-profit organizations to create artist-led campaigns to increase public awareness related to water and energy, conservation, climate mitigation, public-health awareness around COVID-19, civic engagement, and social justice.

“California Creative Corps will support our arts and culture organizations as they put their creativity to work addressing some of our most pressing community issues,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg.

The City in August was awarded $4.75 million from the California Arts Council to implement the state’s new California Creative Corps program for the capital region.

The grant program consists of two types of grants:

  • Twenty mid-sized grants of $117,000 to nonprofit organizations, collaboratives, and units of local or tribal government
  • Five large grants of $300,000 to nonprofit organizations, and units of local or tribal government

The City also will open a separate application for artists who want to apply for temporary positions in Sacramento City government departments for one year to assist in outreach and engagement around one of the four focus areas.

Both YoloArts and Arts and Culture El Dorado County are partnering with the Office of Arts & Culture to engage their communities in this work.

“YoloArts is honored to work with the City’s Office of Arts and Culture on the Creative Corps program,” said YoloArts Executive Director Alison Flory. “Artists and cultural workers are vital partners within our community, but often overlooked and underutilized. Our communities will benefit from the creative workforce collaborating across sectors to develop outreach campaigns around our most pressing social issues.”

Those interested in participating can find program guidelines and apply on the City’s website: https://arts.cityofsacramento.org/creativecorps

Applications are due May 1 and projects are expected to start in August.

An application webinar will take place at 4 p.m. March 16. Attendees can register on the City’s website. There will also be in-person mixers taking place across the different regions to learn more about the program.
