the Green Team: Composting & Tree Planting Update!

Between composting, gardening, and planting trees in under-served neighborhoods, the Green Team has been hard at work this month! Here’s an update on our progress:

Community Garden & Composting Project

This month we turned our first 800 pounds of compost and diverted another 650 pounds of organic waste from local restaurants. Students from Highlands school joined us for the process, and enjoyed picking veggies from the garden. Our total of diversion of organic waste is now 1200 pounds – not bad for 2 weeks!

Neighborhood Tree Planting

Our tree planting day was a huge success! In collaboration with Sac Tree Foundation, Marhalika Lions Club, and SMUD, we provided (and planted!) free shade trees to neighbors in the North City Farm, South City Farm, and Woodbine area. All journeys start with a first step, and we couldn’t be more proud of our volunteers for starting this project to get trees into communities that have known low tree canopies.
