A message from the president
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Directors for hanging in there with me throughout the year. We were all full of challenges with substantial personal concerns that distracted from our ability to complete all of our desired goals. But we did manage to have some successful events and to engage the community despite all of the bumps in the road. No one knows what challenges the future will bring but together we will get through any challenges we may face.
A message from the president
This is be my last message as President. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Prosperous New Year and to thank you all for your support and shared vision of United Latinos. We most certainly had a very successful year and I look forward my continued involvement as Past President on the UL Board.
United Latinos has been actively involved with the selection process by the Sacramento School. Members of United Latinos met with the consultants hired to facilitate the hiring process on several occasions. In addition to both verbal and written input, United Latinos representatives have met with the majority of the School Board members to express our concerns and desire to have a Superintendent who can actively represent the needs of the Latino Community. We are elated to announce the selection of Jose Banda (Latino) who brings valuable experience to SCUSD.
It is worth noting that this effort was taken in collaboration with Cien Amigos who share our passion for the educational needs of our Latino children.
The Seattle Times reports (http://is.gd/l7txN0 ) that Sacramento school board members will visit Seattle next week in the “final phase” of the hiring process.
Banda, who has been Seattle’s superintendent since 2012, called it a difficult decision in a letter released Friday, but said the move would put him closer to his family.
Seattle School Board President Sharon Peaslee said the board would quickly create a plan for transitioning to new leadership.
Banda helped the school district pass two levies in 2013 totaling $1.25?billion for operating expenses and school construction. His staff and the school board had gone back and forth over how to redraw school boundaries to account for swelling enrollment.
Hello United Latino members and friends. As President of United Latinos-Promoviendo Accion Civica, I am looking forward to a productive 2014. 2014 is an election year, although there is no presidential election at the national level, our work as a civic organization is not any less important here in California. California has state elections coming up on Tuesday, June 3 for the Primary Election and on Tuesday November 4, for the General Election.
